What Is Breaking Ribbons?
In an ideal world, cancer ribbons wouldn’t exist — because cures would. Until that day comes, Breaking Ribbons exists to honor those we’ve lost, stand with families in the fight, and push the limits of what’s possible in their name.
The name comes from running — when a runner wins a race, they “break tape” crossing the finish line. Plus, we do not have these ribbons in an ideal world. Hence, Breaking Ribbons.
Founded in 2023, Breaking Ribbons began as our Founder, Ryan Cass’, way to make running something more than the miles.
That mission started with a 100-mile run across the Ravenel Bridge in Charleston, SC: 20 round trips on a span notorious for its steep grades, relentless sun, and brutal climbs. It took 22 hours — and raised $5,000 to help four families in South Carolina.
In 2024, the challenge grew to 150 miles on the bridge. 30 round trips. 43 hours. $8,000 raised for families across the Southeast.
And in 2025, the ante is increasing again: running across the entire state of South Carolina.
Every race, the Breaking Ribbons singlet carries the names of three lives that inspire every step — Anita Cass, Julia Tomasovich, and Noah Mayberry. They remind us why this matters.
The ultimate dream is bigger than one runner. It’s a community of countless runners choosing hard things, logging miles, and raising support for families fighting cancer. Because while we choose to suffer on the roads, they never chose their battle. Together, we can bring them strength, relief, and hope.
